Kappad :
On 27th May 1498, Vasco-De Gama landed here with three vessels and 170 men. The story of a long and tumultuous socio-political relationship between India and Europe. It was the spices and wealth of Malabar that first brought the Arabs, the Phoenicians, the Greeks, the Romans, the Portuguese, the Dutch and the English to Kerala.
Kappad, or Kappakadavu locally, is famous as the beach near Kozhikode (Calicut), India, where the Portuguese explorer Vasco Da Gama landed on May 20, 1498. His voyage established the sea route from Europe to India. This heralded the arrival and permanent presence of various European merchant companies, leading to eventual domination and rule by the English East India Company and later the period of British colonial rule.
Kappad has witnessed many such landings. A monument is here to commemorate the historical landing. An ancient temple on a hillock, facing the deep sea, is an added attraction. The unblemished beauty and serenity of the beach is something that is intact despite increasing tourism.
For the ultimate beach experience, plan your holiday at the Kappad Beach Resort. Set amidst pleasant surroundings, the resort is the ideal place where one can combine relaxation with rejuvenating Ayurveda therapies.
The resort's unique cottages - each one is named after the Portuguese explorers who came to India - face the sea. From the balconies of the upper floor rooms one can see glorious sunsets.
The resort also arranges visits to Beypore where wooden Arabian Dhows or boats are still made. Guests are also given an opportunity to go fishing into the sea on traditional boats. In the evenings, shows on the traditional art forms like Theyyam, Kathakali and Kalaripayattu -- a martial art form typical of Kerala - are staged.
Kappad Beach Resort's circular restaurant specialises in the regional cuisine of North Malabar. Eat your fill of fresh seafood. The open kitchen of the restaurant and the friendly chef makes the dining experience worthwhile.
